Calling up-and-coming playwrights with no/minimal experience in performance or stage production! This unique, hands-on workshop is geared just for you.

New playwrights often write without understanding how their script can be staged. This is because they may lack personal experience in directing and performing plays. In this workshop, participants provide at a short script (10 A4 pages max, 12 hard copies) that they have written. With the help of theatre veteran, Verena Tay, participants direct/act out each script and in the process learn stagecraft, workshop their script and get a better sense of how to craft a stageable play.

When we do our own creative writing, sometimes it can be useful for us to draw inspiration from these old stories, instead of trying in vain to devise new plotlines and themes to capture what we want to say.

Spinning Your Supernatural Yarn

Addicted to vampire stories (e.g. Twilight), horror classics (e.g. Frankenstein, The Raven) or even local supernatural folk lore (e.g. the Pontianak) to send chills regularly down your spine? And are you an aspiring Anne Rice or Stephen King who wishes to write tales of the supernatural that will haunt your readers long after they have read your story?

If yes to both, then the prose writing workshop that the National Library Board is organising this September is just for you. In September 2012, the National Library Board organised Spinning Your Supernatural Yarn, a writing workshop centred around the theme of 'horror'. Closely mentored by seasoned local writer and storyteller, Verena Tay, participants challenged themselves to craft an original piece that tingled the spine and induced goose bumps. DARK TALES is a compilation of the five best pieces of writing created by the first-time writers (Carena Low, Lynn Dresel, Karen Lim Shor-Wei, Alex Mitchell and Renee He Xiu Qing). Hear from the writers at this session, as well as the creator of the lovely images in the publication.
